Do Hair Growth Gummies Actually Work?
Some of the ingredients have real evidence behind them. Almost none of the finished gummies have been tested as a whole. That distinction is the entire question, and most marketing is built to blur it.
Hair gummies rely on a fairly consistent ingredient list across brands: biotin, MSM, zinc, often collagen or a B-vitamin complex. Whether "hair growth gummies work" really breaks into two separate, checkable questions: do these ingredients individually have real evidence, and has any specific finished gummy actually been tested?
Biotin: the most common ingredient, and the thinnest evidence
Biotin (vitamin B7) is a genuine cofactor in keratin production, which is why it's marketed for hair. But per a review published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology titled "Biotin for Hair Loss: Teasing Out the Evidence," clinical studies demonstrating biotin's effectiveness in healthy adults who aren't actually biotin-deficient are still lacking. The people who do show real benefit in the research tend to have an underlying condition — an actual biotin deficiency, or a rare condition called uncombable hair syndrome — not the average person buying a gummy off a shelf. Most people taking a hair gummy do not have a diagnosed deficiency.
MSM and zinc: a more rigorous real trial exists
This is where the evidence gets more interesting. A real, registered trial — ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT06174441, "The Effect of 24-week Dietary Intake of Food Supplements on Hair" (also called TO-HAIR) — is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 89 participants, run by the Institute of Cosmetics at VIST Faculty of Applied Sciences in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It tests two formulations against placebo over 24 weeks in adults with self-perceived hair thinning: one built around fish collagen, MSM, vitamins, and zinc; the other around herbal extracts, B-vitamins, and zinc. Twenty-four weeks is a meaningfully longer window than most hair-supplement marketing implies is needed, which matches how slowly hair actually grows.
What this trial does and doesn't prove. It's a legitimate study of specific ingredient combinations — MSM, zinc, vitamins — not of any one commercial brand's exact gummy formula. In our own Hair Growth investigation, we found one product that cites this exact trial correctly: at the ingredient level, honestly, without claiming the finished gummy itself was the subject of the study. That's the rare, correct way to use a real citation — and worth naming, since most of the products we've checked across this site get that distinction wrong somewhere.
Two additional registered trials — NCT05800496 and NCT05972512 — are separately studying plant-based biotin formulations for hair, skin, and nail outcomes, which is worth knowing mainly because it shows this ingredient category is still actively being researched, not a settled question either way.
The phrase to watch for
The slide from "clinically studied ingredients" to "clinically proven" is where most hair supplement marketing overstates its case. Ingredients having research behind them tells you very little about whether a specific dose, inside a specific gummy, alongside two dozen other ingredients, actually produces the same result the standalone ingredient study found.
Hair growth gummies aren't uniformly snake oil — MSM, zinc, and several other common ingredients have real, if still-developing, evidence behind them, and at least one real 24-week registered trial specifically tests ingredient combinations close to what's in many commercial formulas. But the honest starting expectation is modest support, not a guaranteed fix, and the finished gummy you're buying is almost never the exact thing that was tested.
